Welcome to the Reportex Legal Evaluation Hub. This page will prepare you for your evaluation and give you an idea of what working with Reportex is like.

Please read all these materials thoroughly. Once you’ve done so, we will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Note that this process is partially designed to evaluate your ability to carefully follow instruction, so please read all the materials thoroughly before emailing with questions.

About the Evaluation Process

Joining our team entails a significant investment for both you and Reportex. You will need to invest in expensive software and we will need to invest significant time in training you and reviewing your initial work. The reason for our extensive evaluation process is to ensure that you enjoy the work and that you have the requisite skill and aptitude. While our contractors enjoy the flexibility and compensation provided by their position, we recognize that it isn't for everyone. Note that while the files we provide you are real court proceedings, they are work that we have already completed.  Therefore, the work you do during your evaluation is only for the purpose of the evaluation itself and we do not make any money from this process.

System Requirements

There are certain pieces of technology that are necessary in order to do your evaluation with Reportex. In particular, you must have a computer set up at a workstation in an environment that is conducive to concentration and with the following components loaded and properly functioning.

  • Windows operating system
  • MS Word*
  • minimum of 8 GB RAM
  • minimum of 25% free space on your hard drive
  • high-speed internet connection
  • stereo headphones (transcriptionists only)
  • digital foot pedal (transcriptionists only)  (Note:  if you do not have a foot pedal, you can borrow one from Reportex upon payment of a $100 deposit. This deposit will be returned to you when you return the foot pedal to Reportex.)

*Note: We use MS Word (version 2010 or newer) for the evaluation period in order to save you the cost of purchasing the specialized court reporting software that we use. This allows both you and the evaluator the opportunity to determine whether this is the right career path for you without requiring you to spend a lot of money at the outset.

Transcription Software Program

Note:  This program is not required for proofreaders.

In order to play the evaluation audio files you will need to install the free FTR TheRecord Player program.

Even if you already have your own digital transcription program, you will still have to download the FTR TheRecord Player program, as you will need it to play the Digital Audio Recording System (DARS) audio files for your court transcription evaluation.

The FTR guide provides instructions on downloading, installing, configuring and using this free program. Please click here to download the guide. Follow the instructions and let us know if you have any difficulties setting up this program.

Downloading Files

You will need to refer to a number of documents throughout the course of your evaluation. Before you download any of these attachments, create a folder on your hard drive named “Reportex Evaluation Files.” Then save these documents as well as any future evaluation documents into this folder. You should also put the FTR TheRecord Player guide into this folder. (This may seem like a rudimentary instruction; however, it is critical that you maintain a high degree of organization if you are to succeed as a legal scoper, proofreader or transcriptionists.)

Preparing for Evaluation

Once your system and any necessary equipment are in place, it’s time to start the evaluation process. Select the appropriate section for your evaluation and download all of the documents, which you will need to refer to throughout the course of your evaluation:
